Fender hand-coiled and sculpted the original according to age-old methods and fired it using San Ildefonso's characteristic outdoor kiln and smothering technique, which produces the piece's rich black color. He then added his own personal touches in the form of turquoise accents, whose colors shine in this design. The originals for Series 1 through 4 are on display at the Indian Pueblo Store located inside the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. All of the participating artists receive royalties for each mug sold, with proceeds also supporting the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico.
